A North Dakota farmer suffered a major heart attack while battling a fire that broke out in the combine he was using for harvesting on his farm. Lane Unhjem’s heroic efforts led to his hospitalization due to stress on his heart, leaving his crops untouched and putting his family’s financial stability at risk.
However, in the spirit of community, around 40 to 50 neighboring farmers rallied together to lend a helping hand. They managed to harvest an astonishing 1,000 acres of crops in just over seven hours, demonstrating the power of unity and compassion.
In September 2020, while operating his combine, Lane Unhjem’s machine caught fire while he was trying to protect his crops. Amid his brave efforts, he experienced a major heart attack and was hospitalized for treatment, including a damaged kidney that required dialysis and placement on the transplant list for both organs.
Meanwhile, the local community stepped in to support the Unhjem family. Jenna Binde, a family friend, highlighted the strong sense of unity among the farmers, emphasizing the principle of helping one another without expecting anything in return.
Putting their own needs on hold, neighbors left their own harvesting behind to come together and ensure Lane’s crops were harvested.
“You reap what you sow! That’s the old saying that can apply to a lot of things in life. Well, today it has a two-fold meaning–harvesting crops and helping friends!” wrote Don Anderson, expressing admiration for the community’s response. With approximately 40 to 50 farmers participating, they utilized combines, grain carts, semis, and other equipment to carry out the operation.
The swift execution of this collective effort resulted in harvesting 1,000 acres within just over 7 hours, a testament to the dedication and support of the community.
